Marcus Rashford’s extra-time goal sent Manchester United into the Europa League semi-final at the expense of Anderlecht on a night of tension at Old Trafford.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan put Utd in front on the night and on aggregrate but that lead was snuffed out when Anderlecht restored parity when Sofiane Hanni scrambled home an equaliser after 32 minutes.
Manager Jose Mourihno will have been furious at the number of missed chances that Utd squandered and to add to his concerns, injuries to defender Marcos Rojo in the first half and a serious-looking knee injury to top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic at the end of normal time.
Rashford, Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogb, all missed golden chances to put the game and the tie to bed and just when it looked as though the tie was heading to a penalty shoot-out, Rashford made ammends by hitting the winner to keep alive Utd’s hopes of winning the Europa League and with it, a place in the Champions League next year.
Lyon, Ajax and Celta Vigo are the other sides into the last four.
