Ghedin’s last game as national coach ends in defeat to Slovakia

Pietro Ghedin’s last game as the national coach ended in defeat as Malta lost 3-0 in Slovakia in their final Group F World Cup qualifier.

Despite picking up their first point in the group in a 1-1 draw against Lithuania at the weekend Ghedin had predicted that Slovakia bidding for second place in the group and with players from top European clubs, would be a totally different game.

Slovakia took the lead on the half hour when Nemec’s shot beat Hogg, they doubled their lead on the hour mark when Malta lost possession in their own box and Nemec again getting the better of Hogg.

A third goal ten minutes later sealed the tie for Slovakia and with the news that Scotland were losing to Slovenia filtering around the ground, time for extra celebrations as they clinched second place in Group F and a place in the play-offs.
