Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe resigns

Robert Mugabe has resigned as President of Zimbabwe after 37 years.

He said he had chosen to step down “to allow the smooth transfer of power” and made the decision voluntarily.

“My decision to resign is voluntary on my part and arises from my concern for the welfare of the people of Zimbabwe and my desire for a smooth, non-violent transfer of power”

Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa will take over as the country’s leader.
