A dominant performance from the Malta women’s team resulted in a comprehensive 4-0 victory over the United Arab Emirates in a friendly match at the Centenary Stadium on Thursday.
Malta, ranked 91st by FIFA, started the game against the UAE – ranked 80th – on the front foot in an attempt to take an early lead.
UAE, on their part, struggled to make headway in attack and were continuously forced to cope with Malta’s offensive prowess.
Dorianne Theuma’s well-struck volley after 13 minutes fired Malta ahead.
Mark Gatt’s girls remained on top but had to wait until the dying minutes of the first half to increase their lead.
Jade Flask made it 2-0 on the brink of half-time after concluding a flowing move with an angled grounder.
Theuma added a third in first-half stoppage time from the penalty spot to virtually seal Malta’s win.
Late in the game, Raina Giusti rounded the scoring after beating the UAE goalkeeper from close range.
The second friendly match between Malta and UAE will be played on Sunday at the Centenary Stadium, starting at 10am.
