De Valette’s dagger returns to Malta

For the first time in 219 years, the De Valette Dagger has returned to Malta and will be on display as part of events celebrating Malta’s Term of Presidency of the European Union.

The dagger was a gift to Grand Master Valette from the King of Spain following Malta’s defeat of Turkish forces in 1565.

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat met with French President Hollande who agreed to the dagger being loaned to Malta on the strict understanding that it would be returned.

The dagger is on display at the National Musuem of Archaeology until July 9th.
